I was looking for a while and I’ve tried all kinds of different settings to get my Motorola MPx220 online through T-Mobile (it is a Cingular branded phone). I finally decided to give up the T-Zones idea and just set up my own HTTP proxy on a port that T-Mobile allows with my limited plan (port 110, POP3).
This works fine if all you want to do is browse the web and check email. You get billed directly for this use though, even if you have the plan, so I used my phone very sparingly for this stuff - especially since I also carry a BlackBerry with unlimited access for one price.
I read an article about Exchange 2003’s “push” ActiveSync (I’ll write an article later how to set this up - it can be a little tricky) and decided that I need to play. Unfortunately, ActiveSync doesn’t play nice with the proxy I set up, so I had to figure out T-Mobile’s actual configuration to get my phone online.
Anyways, here are the proper settings for a Smartphone on T-Mobile:
More details after the jump if you’d specifically like to know how to configure these settings on a Windows Smartphone.
- Go to your Home Screen
- Click Start
- Select Settings (item 8)
- Select More… (item 9)
- Select Data Connections (item 2)
- Click Menu
- Select Edit Connections (item 1)
- Select GPRS Connections (item 4)
- Click Menu
- Select Add (item 1)
- Fill in information on screen
- Type in Description with a memorable name for this GPRS connection. I chose T-Zones.
- In the Connects to dropdown, choose WAP Network
- Enter in Access point the following address: wap.voicestream.com
- Check to make sure that both DNS server boxes are either blank or contain the address 0.0.0.0 and that all other fields are blank.
- Click Done
- Click Done
- Select Proxy Connections (item 3)
- Select Add (item 1)
- Fill in information on screen
- Type in Description with a memorable name for this proxy connection. I chose T-Zones.
- In the Connects from dropdown, choose WAP Network
- In the Connects to dropdown, choose The Internet
- Enter in Proxy (name:port) the following address: 216.155.165.50:8080
- In the Type dropdown, choose HTTP
- Leave the User name and Password fields blank.
- Click Done
- Click Done
- Click Done
- Ensure all the connection types are set to Automatic on the main Data Connections screen.
Now you should be able to fire up Internet Explorer and hit your favorite website: http://d0rk.org.

Hello and thanks for the tip. I followed your instructions but am still unable to connect to the internet using my MPX220 unlocked phone with a t-mobile unlimited data plan. I just signed up today so maybe I should try again tomorrow. One thing that I noticed is that I can’t set the WAP Proxy to “Automatic” as you suggested.. so I set it to the proxy connection that I created in step #14. Any ideas?
Thanks!

I think that wap.voicestream.com is only for the T-Zones plans (like I’ve got). If you did the $20/mo unlimited data plan on your phone, you may have to use internet2.voicestream.com.

Thanks for the response. I tried it, but still nothing. I guess i’ll just have to wait until tomorrow to ensure the service has actually kicked in. I’ll post again tomorrow with my results.
Thanks!

I have found the same setup no some forum online and after a few tries I finally got it working. The blog actually missed the last 2 steps, which is making sure under Internet explorer option you have to set it to
1) check the automatically detect settings
and
2) select network: WAP Network

I had better luck with this configuration:
http://singleservingblog.blogspot.com/2006/02/motorola-mpx220-t-mobile-configuration.html
Looks like the biggest difference is that the connections configuration screen is different… well I guess there are a couple more differences. Anyway, this is the only one that worked for me.

Thanks for the update. I think the only important thing that you need to understand with the T-Zones plan and this setup is the proxy. To go from WAP -> Internet, you need the proxy mentioned above (and thousands of other places on the web). Then it is just a matter of configuring your programs to use that proxy as necessary.
Unfortunately on my SDA, the Java implementation ignores this proxy so I can’t use Google Local Mobile anymore :(

T-Mobile support walked me through setting up my phone. After about two hours with them on the phone, I gave up. They kept telling me to setup my Proxy connections like this:
Type = WAP
216.155.165.50:9120
When I found your site, it said to setup
Type = HTTP
Now, my internet works. Thanks a lot.

It is not nice to tease your mentally handicapped friend. It is not his fault he was dropped on his head in a swimming pool and swallowed water. It affected all his motor skills and renered him usless to society. But he is still a nice guy.
